गृहस्थको घर में कुत्ता नहीं रखना चाहिये । महाभारत में कहा गया है
भिन्नभाण्डं च खट्वां च कुक्कुटं शुनकं तथा ।
अप्रशस्तानि सर्वाणि यश्च वृक्षो गृहेरुहः ॥
भिन्नभाण्डे कलिं प्राहुः खट्वायां तु धनक्षयः ।
कुक्कुटे शुनके चैव हविर्नाश्नन्ति देवताः ।
वृक्षमूले ध्रुवं सत्त्वं तस्माद् वृक्ष न रोपयेत् ॥
(महाभारत, अनु॰ १२७ । १५-१६)
‘घरमें फूटे बर्तन, टूटी खाट, मुर्गा, कुत्ता और अश्वत्थादि वृक्ष का होना अच्छा नहीं माना गया है । फूटे बर्तन में कलियुगका वास कहा गया है । टूटी खाट रहने से धन की हानि होती है । मुर्गे और कुत्ते के रहने पर देवता उस घर में हविष्य ग्रहण नहीं करते तथा मकान के अन्दर कोई बड़ा वृक्ष होने पर उसकी जड़ के भीतर साँप, बिच्छू आदि जन्तुओं का रहना अनिवार्य हो जाता है, इसलिये घरके भीतर पेड़ न लगाये ।’
कुत्ता महान् अशुद्ध, अपवित्र होता है । उसके खान-पान से, स्पर्श से, उसके जगह-जगह बैठने से गृहस्थ के खान-पान में, रहन-सहन में अशुद्धि, अपवित्रता आती है और अपवित्रता का फल भी अपवित्र ही होता है ।।

I am not sure about vedic scriptures but there is a medical reason of this.
But as per some medical facts, there are some health problem which dogs can create in human. Dogs carry such tapeworms which are harmfull for human.
There are three cysts: Lipoma, simple cyst & hydatid cyst
Lipoma cysts are harmles and located just below the skin. You will not feel pain in them.
Simple cyst is also a kind of lipoma which may produce in any part of body.
Hydatid cysts are caused by a tapeworm known as Echinococcus granulosus.
These tapeworms reproduce more tapeworms in dogs and are passed in dog stool contaminating grass, the dogs hair, mouth etc, So these tapeworms are spread on the grass. These tapeworm eggs are picked up by grazing cattle and sheeps or accidentally by humans if they come in to contact of such grass or dog hair/mouth. Dogs can be a potential source of infection to humans.
Each egg hatches in the intestine of the recipient. This parasite may reach to different parts of body specially liver, lungs and sometimes to the brain, Slowly they develop into hydatid cysts (fluid filled). Hydatid cysts can grow quite large.
That's the reason we should not keep dogs in our house.
