Monkeypox is caused by the monkeypox virus. Because it's a zoonotic virus, it can transfer from animals to humans. It is a contagious disease.

Reasons:

• Monkeypox is spread when an infected animal or human comes into contact with you. When the skin is broken, such as from bites or scratches, or when the infected animal's blood, body fluids, or pox lesions come into direct contact with the ill person, animal-to-human transmission occurs.
• Monkeypox can also be transmitted from person to person, but this is uncommon. When you come into contact with viral particles from another person, this is known as person-to-individual dissemination (transmission). When an infected individual coughs or sneezes, the virus can spread via the air.
• Monkeypox can also be caught through coming into contact with virus-infected products, either directly or indirectly. These materials can include clothing, bedding, and other linens worn by an infected person or animal.

Symptoms:

• Symptoms include a fever, a severe headache, muscle aches, back pain, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and a skin rash. The number of lesions on a person's body might range from a few hundred to several thousand.
• The face, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet are the most commonly affected areas. Lips, genitals, and eyes are also affected.
• If not treated, symptoms normally persist 2 to 4 weeks and then go away on their own. If you think you have symptoms that could be caused by monkeypox, see your doctor. If you've had close contact with someone who has monkeypox, whether suspected or proven, tell them.
