Thums up, was an Indian Cola Brand, launched in Indian Market in 1977, by Parle. This cola drink was developed by young MIT graduate Ramesh Chauhan, with Indian Masalas. The brand become very popular among Indians because of its unique taste, name and marketing.
Decades passed, Coca-Cola re-entered the Indian Market in 1993. They started their marketing in newer ways, by painting walls with red. Firstly, the Cola created fake distributorship company and purchase all stocks from thums up and drain it into drains and resist the Indian Cola to reach Indians. So, the people were left with only one choice i.e. Coca-Cola.
Now, Coca-Cola starts invading Thums up. Then, Coca Cola focus on bottling plants of Thums-up. Out of 62 plants, Thums up owns only 4 plants and the rest 58 were under franchises, who were already unhappy with Ramesh Chauhan. Coca-Cola took advantage of this and captured those franchises and distributors destroyed the distribution and manufacturing network of Thums up.
With fewer plants, Thums up was unable to fulfill the demand and Coca-Cola took over all the market shares of Thums up. By the early 90,s, Atlanta,s Coca-Cola purchased the Indian Thums up and defeated the Ramesh Chauhan.
