Pregnancy is one the most sensitive time period for a women. During this period, the mother and the baby needs too much and proper care for good development of the child. Many women have some diseases during their pregnancy and to treat these diseases, medicines are given. Many medicines can cross the placenta and cause harm to the baby. The medicines which can cause harm to the baby are considered as TERATOGENIC. Here i will name those medicines which should be avoided during pregnancy.
1. Anti hypertensive medicines
The class of medicines, ACE inhibitors and ARBs inhibitors should be avoided in pregnancy. The safe ones are Methyldopa, Prazosin, etc.
2. Anti Epileptic Medicines
All anti Epileptic Medicines are teratogenic. The most teratogenic is Valproate. If a pregnant female is already taking an anti Epileptic drug, then the same therapy should be continued in pregnancy, otherwise, if we change the drug, mother can develop seizures.
3. Bipolar Disorder
The drug for bipolar Disorder is lithium. It can cause harmful effects like Abstein Anomaly. So this should be avoided. Alcohol should also be avoided in pregnancy.
4. Anti diabetic medicine
Insulin is safe for pregnant women. So it can be given.
5. Drug used in hyperthyroidism
Propylthiouracil is hood during 1 trimester. Carbimazole and Methimazole can be ysed in 2nd and 3rd trimester.
6. Anti microbial medicines
Most of the anti microbials should be avoided in pregnancy. Tetracycline cause damage to bone and teeth. Aminoglycosides cause hearing loss. The safe ones are penicillin, cindamycin and microlides.
7. Anti malarial Medicines
Chloroquine is the preferred medicine during 1st trimester. ACT can be given in the 2nd and 3rd trimester.
8. Hematology medicines.
Warfarin which is an anti coagulant is teratogenic. It is avoided in 1st trimester. Heparin is safe.
So the above mentioned medicines should be avoided in pregnancy.
