Copper is one of the very important element in our body. Here I will list all the sources of copper, functions in our body and deficiency symptoms of Copper.
Copper is a trace element which is widely distributed in our body.
Sources of Copper
Organ Meat
Green leafy vegetables
Fruits
Nuts
Cereals, etc.
Functions of Copper in our Body
1. It is a important co factor for many biochemical enzymes :
Lysyl oxidase( important for making blood vessels wall)
Tyrosinase ( helps in formation of Melanin)
Ceruloplasmin ( helps in transport of Copper in the body).
Superoxide Dismutase (which is an powerful antioxidant)
Cytochrome oxidade( required for Electron Transport chain in mitochondria to produce energy)
2. It is involved in cellular respiration.
3. It helps in transport of Iron with help of Ceruloplasmin.
4. It is required for Heme synthesis in our body.
Deficiency Symptoms of Copper
The diseases related to deficiency of Copper in our body are
1. Wilson's Disease : It is a Autosomal recessive disorder in which there is mutation in Copper binding ATPase(required for transfer of copper from liver to bile).
As a result, Copper accumulates in liver leading to liver damage and later on, it damages lenticular nucleus of brain.
In this disease, Corneal membrane of eye becomes golden brown in colour.
2. Anemia : Since, Copper is required for heme synthesis, therefore deficiency can cause Anemia, the anemia here is normochromic and microcytic.
3. Cardiovascular Abnormalities : Since copper is required for blood vessels wall formation, deficiency will lead to vessel wall damage and can lead to rupture of Aorta or Aneurysm.
4. Manke Kinky Hair Syndrome : In this also, Copper accumulates in cells.
5. Hyperpigmentation: Due to defect in Tyrosinase.
So, keep your body stores of Copper normal otherwise that will cause great harm to your body.
Thank you.
