What is Tomato Flu?
In our country, unexplained fever in children under the age of five is not rare. Tomato Flu is a rare viral disease caused by Chikungunya virus causing skin irritation, rashes, blisters, dehydration and mainly affects children under age of 5. This disease is termed as Tomato fever or Tomato Flu because of resemblance of blisters on whole body surface with colour of tomato.
History of Tomato Flu
The Tomato Flu was first identified in the Kollam district of Kerela on 6th May 2022 and till end of July, 2022, total 82 cases were reported. This endemic viral disease also triggered an alert in neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Apart from Kerela, Odisha has also been reported to found 26 cases of this illness so far.
Cause of Tomato Flu
Till now, no causes have been found that cause tomato flu. Some health investigators say that it might not be any new virus but a variant of Viral hand, foot and mouth disease. The incubation period of this flu is 5-7 days.
Symptoms of Tomato Flu
The symptoms are similar to that of dengue and chikungunya which includes:
Skin irritation
Discolouration
Fatigue and tiredness
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Abdominal cramps
Dehydration
Coughing, sneezing, fever
Body aches and swelling of joints
Treatment of Tomato Flu
Since the symptoms are similar to Dengue and Chikungunya, the treatment is also similar. The treatment includes rest, isolation, plenty of fluids, hot water bag for skin irritation and rashes.
Also, you can take paracetamol or Dolo for fever and body ache.
A doctor appointment is required as soon as the children start showing symptoms.
Prevention of Tomato Flu
As we all have heard, "Prevention is better than cure". Here are some preventive measures to avoid tomato flu:
1. Since children under the age of 5 are at great risk, they should be taught social distancing.
2. Avoid close contact with the infected person.
3. Take care of children hygiene and make them wash their hand with soap and water frequently.
4. Tell children not to scratch any blister or rash.
5. Include immunity boosters such as Spirulina, Aloevera tablets in the diet of your child.
