I was watching a movie Titanic. Suddenly, a question stuck into my mind why ship floats. Can you tell me the reason ?
We know that ship float in water. And if we throw a needle in water, it gets sink. Let's understand what is the reason behind this. Do you know about Archimedes Principle ?
ARCHIMEDES PRINCIPLE:
It states that when a body is immersed completely or partially in a liquid, it loses in weight and this loss is equal to the weight of liquid displaced by it.
Floating Bodies:
1. The body may sink in liquid : It happens, when weight of the liquid displaced is less than the weight of body
2. The body may float in liquid : It happens when the weight of the submerged part in liquid is equal to weight of body.
For floatation, we need two things, first is less weight so ship is made hollow and second requirement is less area to displace more water because of which it's shape is streamlined. Both of the requirements are fulfilled, so it floats.
