Industrial emissions or combustion of fossil fuels, produce the air pollutants like the oxides of sulphur and nitrogen. When these pollutants interact with vapours and sunlight, they get converted into strong acidic compounds i.e., sulphuric acid and nitric acid. When these acids combine with other organic or inorganic compounds and carry to earth by rain, fog or snow, results into acid rain.
What causes Acid rain ?
1. Rolling vegetation and active volcanoes releases chemicals that cause acid rain.
2. Human activities like coal burning power plants, factories and automobiles also contribute to acid rain.
3. Atmospheric snow also contain large amount of hydrogen sulphate, when this snow melts and enters the water bodies, render them highly acidic, which is commonly referred as "Acid shock" or "Spring shock", which destructs the aquatic life.
What are the effects of acid rain ?
1. Acid rain cause the various skin and eye related problems in Human and animals.
2. It destroys the architectural beauty of our monuments and statutes.
3. Acid rain also removes minerals and nutrients from soil and causes destruction of vegetation.
