Sulfhemoglobinemia is the condition in which people have green blood. Presence of Sulfhemoglobin in the blood is known as Sulphemoglobinemia. Sulphemoglobin is abnormal product formed by irreversible binding of Sulphur with hemoglobin in RBC,s which makes them unable to transport oxygen.
Causes :
This condition is caused by too much exposure to sulphur containing products such as medications that contain sulfonamides, nitrate fertilizers or over consumption of vegetables like spinach.
Symptoms :
People suffering from this rare condition generally face symptoms of chronic constipation, hypoxia (low oxygen level in body), urinary tract infection, cyanosis etc. First case of Sulfhemoglobinemia was reported in 2007, of 42 years old Canadian man due to higher dose of Sumatripatan.
Treatment:
This is generally cured by itself with RBC turnover or in severe cases blood transfusions can be recommended. Vitamin-C is also recommended in this complication. Its treatment also consists of finding the causative drug and avoiding it.
