There are four whorls in flowers namely ;

  • Calyx
  • Corolla
  • Androecium
  • Gynoecium

Each whorl has a different function. Let us discuss one by one in detail.

1. Calyx

It is the outermost part of the flower. The unit that constitutes calyx is called sepal. The base of a flower is surrounded by the sepals, which are tiny modified leaves. While the bloom is closed before and after pollination, sepals support it and shield the other floral parts from damage. Some fruits still have their sepals attached.

Functions ;

  1. Protection of flower during bud stage
  2. Provide food to the plants as at it green in color.

2. Corolla

Corolla is in the inner part of calyx. It is bright in color. The unit that constitutes the corolla is called petal. The petals, which are altered leaves, aid in luring pollinators to the flower. Although the UV spectrum is invisible to the human eye, insects may discern patterns of colours in the ultraviolet spectrum on petals, which are frequently big and highly coloured. Brightly coloured and patterned petals have developed to tell pollinators to head toward the meal.

Functions ;

  1. Protection of essential organ like stamen during bud stage
  2. Attraction of insects for pollination.

3. Androecium :

it is in the inner of corolla. It is the male part of the flower. The unit that constitutes androecium is called Stamen. The masculine component of a flower that produces pollen are the stamens. The stamen's responsibility is to make sure the pollen is delicately adhered to the bodies of pollinators as they visit the flower to consume nectar. Two major components make up each stamen. The pollen-containing anther is the apex of the stamen. An anther is supported by a slender stalk called a filament. Anther is attached to filament through a part called connective.

Functions ;

  1. Reproduction of male gemmate in flower
  2. Formation of pollen grains on anther

4. Gynoecium :

It lies in the inner to Androecium and is the innermost whorl of a flower. It is a female part. The unit that constitutes gynoecium is called carpel. The feminine portion of a flower that receives pollen is called the carpel. As a pollinator moves from blossom to flower, the carpel waits for pollen to be tracked onto it. Three major components make up the carpel. The stigma is the portion of the carpel where the pollen is received. A tube that joins the stigma with the ovary is called a style. The stigma sends genetic material down the style to the ovary. The portion of the carpel that, following pollination, turns into a fruit is called the ovary. Ovules, which eventually become seeds, are found in the ovary.

Functions;

  1. Ovules in ovary to produce female gemmate
  2. Receiving pollen through stigma
