Analgesic use : Aspirin is mainly used for relieving musculoskeletal pain, dysmenorrhora and pain associated with inflammation or tissue damage. Aspirin produces analgesia at lower doses.
Anti pyretic: Aspirin resets the hypothalamic thermostat and reduce the elevated body temperature during fever. For this also, dose required is low.
Anti inflammatory: This effect is seen at higher doses. Aspirin can only provide symptomatic relief such as it can suppress pain, tenderness, swelling, etc.
Anti platelet/Anti thrombotic effect: Aspirin in very low doses produce anti platelet effects.
Now let us discuss some side effects of Aspirin.
- On Gastric system: Aspirin irritates the gastric mucosa and produce vomiting, nausea and dyspepsia.
- On Heart: Prolonged use of Aspirin can aggravate Congestive heart failure.
- Respiratory alkalosis : in normal doses, it can cause respiratory alkalosis but if given for long period, it can cause metabolic acidosis which is fatal.
- Pregnancy: Aspirin increases chances of post partum haemorrhage.
