You must definitely have heard about Aspirin. So here I will tell you about uses and side effects of Aspirin which will be very useful to you.

Let us first start with understanding a bit pharmacology about Aspirin.

Aspirin is a Non steroidal anti inflammatory drug. It is effects include Analgesic effects, anti pyretic effects, anti inflammatory effects, anti platelet effects, acid and electrolyte balance.

Now let us discuss uses of Aspirin in detail.

Analgesic use : Aspirin is mainly used for relieving musculoskeletal pain, dysmenorrhora and pain associated with inflammation or tissue damage. Aspirin produces analgesia at lower doses.

Anti pyretic: Aspirin resets the hypothalamic thermostat and reduce the elevated body temperature during fever. For this also, dose required is low.

Anti inflammatory: This effect is seen at higher doses. Aspirin can only provide symptomatic relief such as it can suppress pain, tenderness, swelling, etc.

Anti platelet/Anti thrombotic effect: Aspirin in very low doses produce anti platelet effects.

 

Now let us discuss some side effects of Aspirin.

  • On Gastric system: Aspirin irritates the gastric mucosa and produce vomiting, nausea and dyspepsia.
  • On Heart: Prolonged use of Aspirin can aggravate Congestive heart failure.
  • Respiratory alkalosis : in normal doses, it can cause respiratory alkalosis but if given for long period, it can cause metabolic acidosis which is fatal.
  • Pregnancy: Aspirin increases chances of post partum haemorrhage.
