When we talk about the achievements of engineering, then this is not possible that there appears no name of Kolkata Howrah Bridge. If you are watching a movie related to Kolkata like PIKU, then you will definitely see a Howrah bridge in it.
You may know that Howrah bridge is most famous in Kolkata but, do know there are no pillars on it?
In 1906, the Howrah station was developed in Kolkata because of which the transportation increased so there occurs the requirement of Floating bridge. After that the Germany signed a tender in a low prize but it was rejected. However, the tender was given to BBJ, Kolkata. 26,500 tonnes of steel was used for the construction which was bought from TATA steel.
Then the design for bridge was prepared in which the Britishers said there should be no pillar in center so as to cross the boats easily. So, four pillars were built on the two corners of Bridge and even no wires are used. There is a difference of 1,500 feet between the two ends of bridge.
However, you may also be shocked to know that to connect the steel plates, no nuts are used, instead Rivets are used to connect the plates.
It was the third longest cantilever bridge at the time of its construction.
