Pillars and columns both are different things But How ?
Pillars and Columns both are the vital part for the construction of buildings. Some people think that pillars and columns both are the one and the same thing. But in actual they have different functions and structures.
How pillars and columns are different ?
Pillars are the vertical support member of the building and are constructed of single piece of timber, concrete or steel or may be built of brick blocks and so on. It may be constructed for decorative and functional purpose. It may also stand alone as an ornamental element of building.
We can say that column is also vertical supportive structure of building, which are typically constructed in masonary, concrete or structural steel, whose only function is to transfer compressive load of roof or ceilings to the floor or foundation. We can consider all pillars as columns but not all columns as pillars.
