What is Surveillance HDD ?

Surveillance drives are designed for 24/7 security systems to record video. Usually, they employ a device known as a network video recorder (NVR). These drives, in contrast to a PC, must constantly be writing data, notably video data. According to a Seagate official, writing makes up around 90% of a surveillance drives activity.

Similar to PC hard drives, surveillance drives have cache (onboard memory) sizes up to 256 MB and are available in 5,400 and 7,200 RPM variants

What is a Normal HDD ?

A non-volatile data storage device is a normal hard disc drive (HDD). Non-volatile storage devices are those that retain data even after being turned off. HDDs are merely one form of storage device, yet they are required by all computers.

Desktop computers, mobile phones, consumer gadgets, and enterprise storage arrays in data centres are frequently equipped with HDDs. They can use magnetic discs to store operating systems, applications, and other things.

Difference between Surveillance HDD and Normal HDD ?

1. A desktop hard drive must operate for 8 to 9 hours on average. However, a surveillance hard disc must work nonstop all day.

2. When reading or writing, a typical surveillance hard drive will typically be faster than a desktop HDD.

3. A surveillance HDD uses less energy than a desktop HDD of comparable performance. This is advantageous for a security system as well because it allows for continued operation even when the power is too low.

4. While surveillance drives are calibrated to spend 90% of their time recording video and 10% evaluating and playing back data, PC drives are built for storage and have read, write, and data transfer capabilities.

5. You could assume that since video drives are made for surveillance settings, the price will be more than Normal HDD.
