1. The Indus River
The Indus has its beginnings on the northern Kailash range in Tibet, close to Lake Manasarovar. In Jammu and Kashmir, it crosses into Indian territory. It travels through a gorge that is 5181 metres deep near Attock, which is located north of Nanga Parbat, and then curves to the south-west before entering Pakistan. It is a total of around 2897 kilometres long. Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej are the principal Indus River tributaries in India.
2. The Brahmaputra River
The Mansarovar lake, which is also the source of the Indus and the Satluj, is where the Brahmaputra originates. After passing Namcha Barwa (7757 m), it makes a U-turn to enter Arunachal Pradesh, India, where it is called as dihang. This river undercuts by a distance of about 5500 metres. It flows across the Indian states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and is joined by a number of tributaries.
3. The Narmada River
It is 1,289 kilometres (801 mi) long and serves as the traditional border between North and South India. It begins at the top of Amarkantak Hill in the Madhya Pradesh state and travels through the Mandla Hills for the first 320 kilometres (200 miles) of its journey. Its overall length is 1312 kilometres , and it passes through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
4. The Tapi River
With a length of roughly 724 km, it is one of the larger rivers in peninsular India. Only the Tapi River, the Narmada River, and the Mahi River flow from east to west. The Tapi River Basin is primarily located in the northern and eastern districts of the Indian state of Maharashtra, specifically Amravati, Akola, Buldhana, Washim, Jalgaon, Dhule, Nandurbar, Malegaon, and Nashik.
5. The Godavari River
The river spans around 1,450 kilometres. It originates in Maharashtra at Trimbakeshwar, about 380 kilometres from the Arabian Sea, and runs southeast through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Orissa, and Andhra Pradesh before emptying into the Bay of Bengal.
6. The Krishna River
One of longest rivers is the Krishna (about 1300 km in length). It starts at Mahabaleswar in Maharashtra, travels through Sangli, and finally reaches the sea at Hamasaladeevi in Andhra Pradesh where it empties into the Bay of Bengal. The states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh are traversed by the Krishna River.
7. The Kaveri River
One of main rivers, the Kaveri , is revered by the Hindus. Dakshin Ganga is another name for this river. The headwaters originate in the Karnataka state Western Ghats region and flow through Tamil Nadu. Into the Bay of Bengal it discharges.
8. The Mahanadi River
The Mahanadi originates in central India Satpura Range and flows east to the Bay of Bengal. The Mahanadi drains a large portion of the states of Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Orissa, and most of Chhattisgarh. It measures roughly 860 kilometres in length.
